Ramblers Orienteering Club

Warm and sunny weather greeted the 86 participants which included 18 children under 12. Many of the young folk enjoyed the 350-meter-long String course that we set especially for them – an innovation that we haven’t used for a long time. The kids really enjoyed it, many of them running the route several times, often on their own.

Montreal park authorities, concerned about land compaction, have imposed a restriction on running off trails at the Bois-de-Liesse, something we hope can be overturned in the future if we are able to convince them through studies that have been made in areas with much heavier orienteering use. Unfortunately, park managers don’t usually like to change their minds, even if faced with convincing arguments.

We set three courses, varying in distance, but with all controls located on trails. Participants were asked not to make off-trail “short-cuts”. Many reported afterwards that they still managed to make navigational errors…although finish times were notably faster than usual.

Francis Falardeau was one who admitted to wasting a little time while doing the Long Course – not much though! His time around the 17-control 6.3 km (best-route) course was pretty fast – just under 28 minutes. Charles Delisle was 2^nd and Dmitri Golovanov 3^rd.

Course 2 used the same controls as #3, but omitted the first five, reducing the distance by 1.3 km. Jean-François Côté covered the distance in 0:31:22. Michael Malouf was 5 min-utes back in 0:36:44. 11-year-old Andrea Rousseau ran the course in 0:46:07, shadowed by her dad.

Course 1 was a shortened version of Course 2. The Christian Reid family, with two young children, covered the 3 km in just under 34 minutes. First-timer, Katay Turcotte, was 2^nd. Later, Reid ran the #2 in 24:42.

(It was a good day for running a second course. Michael Bole did the #1 in 0:17:32.)
