REPORT: Ski ‘n Snowshoe Orienteering
Bois-de-Liesse Nature Park – February 1, 2009
There was certainly plenty of snow for the event. January had brought several major falls – and no rain. Nice! 46 people turned out for the meet, 30 for skiing
and 16 for snowshoeing. There were quite a lot of new faces as well as regulars.
The course layouts were not entirely as I would have preferred to have done. We were under strict restraints from the park to keep everyone “on tracks” and not to use skis to set new trails. That meant that participants had to avoid all “short cuts”. Written notices as well as verbal instructions were given to all who signed up.
We did our utmost to comply and as a result the courses were probably found to be somewhat on the easy side. Nevertheless, it seemed that everyone enjoyed their day … on skis, or snowshoes, and the results show a normal wide range of times. We hope the park were satisfied. We know of only one instance where Orienteers may have wandered – confused in their navigational efforts.
Among the skiers : Francis Falardeau was the fastest around the 16 controls on the 11.3 km Long Course, completing it in 1:00:41. There 4 or 5 others who were hot on his tail however: Michael Bole (1:04:45); Stéphane Lamy (1:07:00); Eric Lillie (1:09:20) and Bruce Glen (1:16:09). Elaine (1:26:35) was the only woman on the Long.
Nicole Roy led all the skiers on the 7.1 km “Middle” course with a fast time of 1:07:00. Thomas Davignon was 2nd (1:21:25) and Barbara Schumann, accompanied by her two pre-teen children, came 3rd (1:24:45).
Stanley Lee did the “Short” 5.1 km course in 48 minutes flat.
The Snowshoe “Long”‘ course, 6.0 km, 14 controls – was convincingly won by Andreas Rutkauskas in just 45 mins, 10 seconds. His “better half”, Jessica Auer, was just 12 minutes behind, though! Visiting Australian, Maurice Anker was 3rd.
The 4.5 km “Middle distance” course was led by a first-time Orienteer (and Rogainer), Eric Christensen (0:53:00). Denise OBriain was just 4 minutes back.
3rd was the team of Suzanne Fortin and Claudio DiGiosia, finishing in 1:09:50.
There was only one entry in the 3.3 km Short-“Shoe” : Mary Ellen Montague did
it in 46 minutes.
Congratulations to everyone who participated
…and THANKS to those who picked up the 28 flags after the meet: Bruce, Elaine, Francis, Eric Christensen, and Gloria, who also handled Registration.
