REPORT: Bois-de-Liesse Nature Park – Sept. 7, 2008

Good weather greeted Orienteers on Sunday morning. Four courses, using 46 controls, were set, offering a challenge for all – ‘learners’ up to advanced class Orienteers.

Participation totalled 93 persons in 57 “starts”. A lot were in family groups, some with teen-aged children, most with kids under 10. We just barely had enough of the Course One maps.

Here in brief are the ‘stars’ of the event.

Thomas Kneubühler covered the 25-control Long-Advanced course in 58:33; two minutes faster than Francis Falardeau and almost 9 minutes ahead of Simon Denier who was 3rd. There were 14 on the course which featured two map-memory controls.

On the #3 ‘Short-Advanced’ the leaders were: 1st: Lars Gawell (1:13:29); 2nd: Jessica Auer (1:32:13), and Nicole Roy (1:36:10). Worthy to note: two women amongst the top three !

The #2 ‘Intermediate’ course saw a close finish for first place. Robert Darby topped a relative beginner, Dave McFadden, by 103 seconds (54:40 / 56:23). The parcours was 4.0 km and had 12 controls.

The #1 course was set around a series of trails and attracted most of the family groups.

The ‘best route’ distance was 2.9 km, and the average time taken to successfully complete it was one hour. The fastest: 35:59 by Marie-Josée Alarie who was accompanied by her 6-years-old son, David. For those who wrote down the code letters but didn’t take the time to see what they spelled, it was ‘MapWalkers’.

Christian Reber (doing the Starts), Gloria (the Registration), Elaine, Bruce and Gloria for flag pick-ups …and one other acknowledgement: Stephen Novosad was not going to be able to come to the meet so he offered to check the controls on Saturday. He received the courses by e-mail and got to the park about 3:30 pm (from Val David). He ran course 4, then 3, then 2, before the light completely gave out – though the rain had not! The placement of the controls were assured for Sunday morning.
