Ramblers Orienteering Club
MEET REPORT
:
Whether to go, or whether to stay home. It often depends on whether we feel sufficiently weatherproofed from the weatherman’s often dire predictions – a predilection that understandably concerns beginner and intermediate-level participants primarily. We live in a “like-to-stay-dry” culture and warnings of rain, maybe even a thunderstorm – well, that often does it …and any outdoor participation suffers.
In fact, the only competitor who got poured on Sunday was Ramblers’ intrepid early riser, Elaine. She fore-ran the Long-Advanced Course starting at 7:45 a.m. By 9:30, though, the sun was breaking through and the rest of the day was really great. Bah, to weather Scrooges!
Total participation was 71, which included 8 children 10 years and over and 6 under ten accompanied by their parents. Surprisingly, it was our supply of the Long-Advanced course maps that were completely depleted. That course had 18 ‘starts’ – 23 runners. (Some went in pairs.) The Club doesn’t usually have so many running on the longest course.
Worth mentioning, for the third event in a row, were the extra workouts achieved by super intrepid member, Stephen Novosad. This time it wasn’t because he had cycled roundtrip to the meet from his home in Val David, as previously, but for his desire to get his monies worth out of a one-day O-meet. After completing the 7.4 km Long Course, Stephen went on to run the #3 and #2 courses. His accumulated time: 2:25:36 for 16 km of orienteering (straight-lines measurement).
There were several great runs
recorded on the Long Advanced course, which on
Christian Reber and Jessica Auer shared honours on the Short Advanced 4.5 km course. Reber was 1st with a time of 0:55:39 and Jessica 2nd in 1:00:28.
The Intermediate Level course, usually one of the most crowded, had only 5 entries, all family groups. The Steve Shaw family had their first Orienteering win, ever, with a time of 1:23:52 over the 4.05 km. Mary Goyens with daughter Laura also did a fine job of navigating the 11 controls to finish close behind the Shaws in 1:30:48.
The “Easy Course” apparently had about the right degree of difficulty. Almost everyone finished in under 1½ hours. John Cornellier ran through the 11 controls in just under a half hour.
Congratulations to all the runners, joggers and walkers who took part. Thanks also to those who helped with the meet, especially Christian, Gloria, Elaine, Bruce and Michael B.
For those who did the #4
“Long-Advanced”, and who might like to know a little more about
that mysterious #15 control in the Mount Royal Cemetery – the Anna Leonowens grave marker – we invite you to have a look at
this site, with photo displaying her middle name – and thus the required code
