Ramblers Orienteering Club
MEET REPORT :
Centre de la Nature de LAVAL –
The day was sunny and mild – ideal weather to be outdoors !
This park doesn’t have the possibility for difficult or through-the-woods orienteering but it does provide the opportunity – at least for advanced Orienteers – to navigate at maximum speed, and that is what we saw amongst the top 8 or 9 competitors on the Long Course. For the less experienced – and they made up the majority, including a great many family groups – there was lots of opportunities to relate what was shown on the map to the features around you. In other words, it is a good site for learning the sport.
The Long Course was comprised of running two different loops non-stop, using separate maps for each. Total distance was 7.3 km. The fastest three finished with just 21 seconds separating them …and five others were close behind – all under one hour.
In the race for 1st place, Jeremy Barnes repeated his win of last year and recorded a time of 0:48:29. In 2nd spot (again) was Dmitri Golovanov with 0:48:35. (Last year he was 93 seconds back of Jeremy!) Oliver Cordoba was in the bronze medal spot with 0:48:50.
Veteran Orienteer, Nicole Roy, was the top woman in 1:15:00. The oldest competitor, Paul Rietzschel, was 200 seconds behind Nicole. Paul was an accidental entry. Being unaware of the O-meet (you’ve ‘gotta get e-mail, Paul), he had gone to the park that morning, with camera and tripod, to take pictures…but found us there instead!
Short Course participants had only to do the first leg of the event – 4.0 km. There were a number of first-timers as well as occasional Orienteers, and a considerable number of family groups, some with infants who got their first taste of the sport from the confines of a back carrier. One couple, new to our events but with considerable talent in ‘O’, turned in the shortest time for the course. Simon Perrault and Carolina Mingarelli completed the 15-control circuit in just 0:42:50. The team of Sylvain Harel with parents, Jean-Marc and Germaine, were 2nd in 44:50 and 3rd, but top woman, was Martina Sanfaçon, 47:23.
There was only one case of “mispunching” at a control and another incidence of a control not being found. (Probably everyone was more careful to check the number on the control tape against their map!) Participation , including children, was 69 (plus the two infants). There were 41 “Starts”.
We are going to have to work on improving these numbers – if we are to last. The help of both members and non-members is needed. We would like to set a goal of at least 100 ‘starts’ at each meet. How about it, folks?
Thanks to those who helped with the meet, especially Stéphane Rousseau who placed all the controls and helped to design the courses. To Gloria, Bruce, Elaine, Elizabeth and Barbara Schumann who assisted with registration, instruction and flag pick-ups.
