Sunny skies
and a comfortable temperature provided ideal conditions for this event. Even
so, participation was very modest. There were 66 adults and children ten years
and over, plus 14 other accompanied youngsters between 3 months and 9 years. The
park is a great place for families. Some apparently were aware of this and
brought badminton raquettes for some after-orienteering fun.
Wildlife competes with spotting controls… The three islands in Centennial’s lake offer great sanctuaries for a wide variety of bird life. Christine Segers reported that on her way around Parcours 3 she spotted a Baltimore Oriole, Blue Herons, Cormorants, a Wood Duck, Grebes and Green Mallards with young. {She also had time to punch-in at the 15 controls on her course. On a nice day, who’s in a hurry, anyway?}
Some competitors were moving pretty quickly, however. Stephen Novosad did the 7.75 km #4 course in 54 minutes, 52 seconds. Ralph Seyfert’s time of 1:05:58 was awarded first place as Stephen had already run the Intermediate Course. The two courses had some mutual controls. Anthony Berkers, Stéphane Rousseau and Bruce Glen were close behind in 1:07:13, 1:09:21 and 1:09:28 respectively. Course 4 consisted of completing course 3 first (4.2 km) and then receiving a second map for another 3.55 km. (straight line measurements)
Of those doing Course
3 only, Christian
Reber completed it in 0:44:55. Patrick Fernet
was 13½ minutes behind in second spot and Jeff Secours took 3rd
place in 1:00:14.
Stephen Novosad, who before the day was over, ran all four
courses, first set out with his 9-year-old son, Tobin. They covered the
14 controls, 3.2 km, in 32 minutes flat. Stéphane
Rousseau had a faster time but it was his second run. Sondra Goldman,
who usually participates with her 6-year old son Joshua, came alone this time and,
we’re happy to report, officially took second place with a time of 1:00:46.
On the 2.7 km Novice
course Robert
Darby, running with his 10-year-old son, Kevin, covered the 2.7 km
(11 controls) in 12 seconds under a half-hour. Speedy! ‘Gotta do Course 2 next time, Robert.
Youngsters Learning Fast… There were two youngsters who
completed a course on their own – with some judicious ‘shadowing’ by a parent. Andrea
Rousseau (10) navi-gated Course 2,
with her mother, Barbara, discreetly following behind. On Course 1
9-year old Tobin did his first course solo, with dad, Stephen, following
closeby. Thomas Davignon
(13) is another young man showing great progress. His
very first O event with us was a Ski-O last February. Today he led two 8-year
old friends in a successful completion of Course 2.
A BIG THANK-YOU to our helpers : Elaine handled ‘starts’; then she, Bruce and Stéphane later picked up the 42 controls; Gloria handled registration. Thanks also to Keith Mallette of DDO’s Sports and Recreation for arranging the use of the chalet. …and finally, thanks in advance to the person who will (we hope) volunteer to translate this wordy document.
Until
next September,
John C
