Mt-Royal Score-O — November 5, 2006

The weather was dry and moderately mild for our 8^th annual Score-Orienteering meet on the mountain. There were 126 ‘starts’ which included a number of family groups – some with young children – and 37 students from John Abbott College, under teacher, Karen Oljemark. Total participation was 162.

We had two mass starts. The first was at 10:30 a.m., when the majority of competitors hurriedly ‘took off in all directions’ from Le Grand Chalet near the Lookout. Before starting they had two minutes to study their previously unseen map and make route-choice decisions – decisions that would be important in determining the score they could make.

There were 51 ‘controls’ to be hunted down, the most ever at our Score-O’s. A number of locations were fairly close to the start and at easy to find places, while others ranged out to Pine, Park and Mount Royal Avenues to the east and north, and across the Mount-Royal Cemetery to the environs of the Université de Montréal in the west.

The farthest away sites were worth up to 20 points; the nearest ones, 5 points. Unfortunately, two of the farthest controls “went missing” but we gave credit to all who indicated that they had visited these locations.

TWO HOURS was the time limit allowed. Returning “late” caused competitors a PENALTY of 5 points per late-minute. Exact finish times were irrelevant for those with less than the 595-point maximum score.

Only two Orienteers were able to find ALL of the controls and return in under the 2-hour time limit, thus achieving the maximum score. Francis Falardeau did it in just 1:31:52. Thomas Kneübuhler – in a little under the two hours. Bruce Glen finished 3^rd with 540 points and Charles Delisle 4^th with 510.

Erica Lay, a McGill student and a member of B.C.’s “Victorienteers”, was 1^st among women with 490 points. Ariane Burke of Ottawa O.C. repeated from last year as the female runner-up with 430 points. 3^rd was, Denise OBrian, with 375.

Saturday’s course vetters: Robert Londei and Alex Creamer. Bruce and David Glen generally. Elaine who helped before and during the meet and later picked up all the controls and, of course, Gloria who made it all work out.
