Street-Orienteering Maze –
Following our Street-O last year
on April 17, we wrote that the weather was absolutely superb…sunny and
22º. Unfortunately, this year it was a
very different story. Heavy rain and
cold temperatures challenged the hardy group of Orienteers who braved the
conditions to complete their O-course.
As expected, the total participation (25 adults plus 6 young children)
was well below our 2005 number, but it was nice to see that there were both
“regulars” present and also several beginners, including families with young
children.
There were three courses: The “Long”
(#3) was about the length of a 1/3 marathon – if run using the shortest route
choices. The 9 km Middle Distance and 5
km Short courses provided the same degree of navigational challenge but at
reduced distances. The last two were
wholly within
David Agar (Ottawa OC) and Charles
Delisle (Azimut-Sherbrooke) were the fastest of the day on the Long Course.
Agar’s time of 1:12:39 narrowly edged Delisle’s 1:14:50. 3rd and 4th places
were also very close and featured two experienced Ramblers Club Orienteers. Christian
Reber was back in 1:25:12, eighty-one seconds ahead of Eric Lillie. Congratulations on great runs by all four.
On Course 2 only 6 minutes separated
the top 4 finishers. Alain Harel
led the way (45:19) followed by Pierre Grondin, Donald Watson and Vincent
Dehail. Marie-Pierre Gauthier, a
relative beginner to Orienteering, was the top woman of day.
Three other families with young
children also took part.
